Getting Started with AI: The Basics

  • What is AI? A Simple Guide: AI isn't science fiction; it's technology that helps us with tasks like writing, analyzing data, and finding information. Think of it as a powerful assistant that can free you up for more important human connections.
  • Key AI Terminology:
    • Generative AI: Tools like ChatGPT or Gemini that can create new content, such as text, images, or code.
    • Prompt Engineering: The skill of writing clear instructions to get the best possible results from an AI tool.
    • Ethical AI: The responsible and fair use of AI, ensuring it doesn't create or spread bias.
  • Recommended First Steps:
    • Start with a Free Tool: Experiment with a widely-used free tool like ChatGPT or Google Gemini for simple tasks like drafting emails or summarizing articles. It may even be the case that your institution/high school has a Microsoft Account that includes opportunity to use Co-Pilot.
    • Practice with Prompts: Try asking an AI for a few things you do every day. Be specific! The more detail you give, the better the result.

Key Components of an Effective AI Prompt

Component

Purpose

Task

Tell the AI exactly what you want it to do. Example: “Summarize this article,” “Write a thank-you email,” “Extract 3 trends.”

Persona

Assign a role to influence the tone and expertise. Example: “Act as a financial aid officer,” or “Respond like a tech-savvy admissions counselor.”

Context

Give background info or goals. The more the AI knows, the better the output. Example: “We’re preparing a workshop for first-gen students.”

Format

Tell the AI how you want the output structured. Example: “In bullet points,” “As a JSON object,” or “Use PACAC brand tone.”

Examples (Few-Shot Prompting)

Show the AI what good responses look like. Give sample input + output pairs to guide it.

✅ Best Practices for AI Prompting

  • Be Clear and Specific
Use natural, conversational English—but remove ambiguity. Say exactly what you want.

  • Use Negative Constraints
Tell the AI what not to do. Example: “Avoid using technical jargon.”

  • Provide Feedback
Treat the conversation like a collaboration. If the response isn’t right, refine the prompt or give corrections.

  • Iterate and Refine
Prompting is a process, not a one-shot deal. Great prompts often take 2–3 rounds.

  • Use Structure for Complex Prompts
Use visual or logical separators like ### or triple quotes """ for long instructions.

  • Leverage Advanced Techniques
    Try:

    • Chain-of-Thought Prompting: “Explain your steps as you solve this.”

    • Adjusting Temperature: Lower = more focused, Higher = more creative (in tools that support this setting).

    • Zero-Shot vs. Few-Shot: Use examples when accuracy or tone is crucial.
