Webinar 1
Title: What is Affirmative Action and How Do I Talk To My College-Bound Students About It?
Panelists:
- Brandi Mapp-Evans – Postsecondary Advisor at Mastery Charter Schools in Philadelphia
- Shantelle Cavin – Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI
- Nicole Barkley-Jones, Esq. – Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Princeton University
- Jade Johnson – Associate Director of College Counseling at the Hill School
Description: This session is designed to set a foundation of understanding the SCOTUS ruling, however it plays out so we can have an understanding of Affirmative Action based on data and research. We also want to prime our rising seniors (and juniors) for the conversation around race-neutral admissions. The first part of this session will be a historical overview of Affirmative Action and how we got here. We will also hear from a university who has already been operating under race-neutral admissions for many years. Lastly, we will hear from current high school counselors as they discuss their experiences counseling all students (not just students of color) who have concerns about the role of race in college admissions.
