Topic:  Ethics in Transfer and International Admissions

Speakers
:

Ruby Battacharya (she/her/hers)
Director of Admissions, Barnard College
NACAC Admission Practices Committee Chair-elect

Ruby is a graduate of Swarthmore College, where she majored in Political Science and French and Francophone Studies and where she also worked in Admissions from 2011-2016 as Assistant Dean of Admissions. After her time at Swarthmore, Ruby earned an Ed.M. in Higher Education from Harvard University and then joined Barnard’s Office of Admissions in 2017, where she currently serves as the Director of Admissions overseeing domestic and international recruitment and the application review processes. She is the chair-elect for NACAC's Admission Practices Committee and a member of the Admissions Advisory Board for Duolingo. Ruby also serves on the International Association for College Admission Counseling Executive Board as Vice President for Admissions and Enrollment Practices. When she isn’t traveling the world (with her loyal companion, Millie the Bear) in search of prospective Barnard students, Ruby enjoys baking and eating her way through New York City.

Jonah O'Hara (he/him/his)
Director of College Counseling, Rocky Hill Country Day School
NACAC Admission Practices Committee Chair

Over the last 25 years, Jonah O’Hara has worked in the admission offices at Boston University, Connecticut College, and St. Edward’s University, as a college counselor at Northfield Mount Hermon School, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, and Rocky Hill Country Day School, and at College Forward, a community-based organization in Austin, Texas.

Jonah is a second-generation American and first-generation college student from a working class, single-parent home, so a career at almost entirely private institutions has always been a learning process, and he is grateful for the patience and guidance from countless colleagues over the years.  He has attempted to return the favor in numerous roles with NEACAC, TACAC, and NACAC.  Currently as Chair for NACAC’s Admission Practices Committee, the majority of Jonah’s professional development work in recent years has centered on examining and discussing inequitable systems and practices that are embedded within educational institutions.

As a college student, Jonah was a thoroughly mediocre two-sport athlete, an average baritone in the choir, and an enthusiastic radio station DJ, hosting a show called, "From the Belly of the Whale it Cometh."  Jonah has a B.A. in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Bates College (Lewiston, Maine) and an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts).

Audience:
Secondary and Postsecondary admissions and school counseling professionals looking to hone their skills and implement best ethical practices into their work.
